Ahimsa – Nonviolence

Over the next year, Evolution invites you to explore the ethical guidelines of yoga, the Yamas and the Niyamas. Each month we’ll explore one together, as a community. February’s theme of the month is Ahimsa, or non-violence. Ahimsa is the “core and foundation of all yoga philosophy and practice.”
In Deborah Adele’s book, “The Yamas & Niyamas,” she presents the concept that creating balance within yourself, is the first act of Ahimsa. “When we are in balance, we automatically live in nonviolence.” She also says, “…our ability to be nonviolent to others is directly related to our ability to be nonviolent within ourselves.” There are subtle ways a person is violent within – negative self-talk, unkind words spoken about self or others, holding onto anger, fear, doubt, worry, and so on.
Following on last month’s theme of starting with observation, continue to observe your body and thoughts during yoga and throughout the day. What are your thoughts like?
